If you think you are suffering from low testosterone production, please read my story. I wrote this article to share my experience. My hope is that this article will be helpful to other men who might be going through the same thing I was. Please note that I am not a physician or an authority on health issues.

I am a 42-year old man, husband and father of 4 children. Approximately 8 years ago I started to feel “off.” It started off with very slow, almost imperceptible changes in how I felt and it gradually became worse. I was very easily winded (even tying my shoes became a huge chore). I had no energy or motivation to do anything. I got dizzy if I stood up too quickly. I started to gain weight without any real change in my diet. I had always been a very sexual person throughout my whole adult life and when I no longer had early morning erections, I knew something was wrong. My libido was pretty much non-existent.

I went to the doctor and was referred to an Endocrinologist. He did a bunch of testing and told me that my testosterone production was very low. I was diagnosed with pituitary hypogonadism which basically means that my body stopped sending signals to my testicles to produce testosterone. He told me that it was somewhat common in men my age. The treatment was for me to give myself an injection of testosterone once every two weeks.

Soon after starting the hormone replacement therapy, I started to feel much better. I noticed that I wasn’t as tired all the time and I started to find an interest in sex again. I thought I had found the cure for my condition but it turned out not to be quite that simple.

I was on the testosterone for many years. Things were great. I had to go back to the doctor every month or so to do blood tests. He wanted to monitor my liver function and check my testosterone levels to make sure I was on the correct dose for my age. One day, the blood tests showed that my red blood cell count was elevated. I had developed a condition called polycythemia Vera – too many red blood cells.

Having too many red blood cells is very dangerous. This condition is life threatening because the hart has to work much harder than usual to pump thicker blood throughout the body. The testosterone that was making me feel better was threatening my life!

I had to go see another doctor – a blood doctor. The treatment for too many red blood cells is to give blood. They take off a pint of blood and hope that the body can’t make red blood cells faster than the doctor can remove them. I needed to give blood several times a month until the red blood cell count in my body was normal.

The testosterone that I needed to feel good was necessary but it meant that I needed to give blood several times a month to keep my red blood cell levels safe. It was horrible.

I heard about Acai Berry and how people were using it to lose weight and detox their bodies. My wife and I decided to give it a try (she wanted to lose some weight). I found a free trial offer online for a one month supply.

I didn’t really notice a whole lot while on the pills other than I wasn’t as hungry as I usually was. I also found that my bowel movements were very easy. My wife lost about 8 pounds in 3 months but I don’t think I lost much weight.

Every time I went to the blood doctor, my Hematocrit level was way too high and I had to give blood to drop it to acceptable levels. I went to the blood doctor again (this was after I had been on the Acai pills for about a month) and this time, the test showed a LOW level of red blood cells. My doctor asked me if I had changed anything. He thought maybe I stopped taking my testosterone shots or something. I told him no. I was still on the testosterone. In fact, I had just recently done my shot about 3-4 days prior to that appointment.

Later that night I realized that I had been taking the Acai pills. I wasn’t doing anything different (other than the Acai) so I believe that it was the Acai pills that were changing my blood profile. I couldn’t find anything on the internet about it but I figured, I was feeling awesome, my blood was perfect, why knock it right? I ordered more of the Acai pills and I still take them to this day.

I went back to the Endocrinologist and did another blood test to check my testosterone level. It was VERY high.

During my hormone replacement treatment, my testosterone levels would fluctuate up and down. The level would be higher if I had recently taken my shot and lower if it had been a while since my last shot.

The doctor asked me if I was taking more of the testosterone than he had prescribed. I told him no. I tried to talk to him about the Acai but he didn’t want to hear it. He dismissed it as a “useless herb.” He lectured me about the dangers of taking steroids to excess. I told him that I was taking the exact amount that he prescribed. I made another appointment to see him a month later.

Again, I went online and tried to research any possible correlation between Acai berry and testosterone production in men. I found nothing! I found that most of the websites were just trying to sell Acai and touted the weight loss effects of the supplement. There didn’t seem to be any scientific research at all – just a bunch of hearsay and hype (“Diet secret of the stars”, “Super Food Acai Berry”, etc…).

When I saw my Endocrinologist again, I had intentionally not taken my testosterone shot when I was supposed to. My levels should have been very low but they were normal! It had been about 9 weeks since my last shot and my levels were normal! My doctor had no explanation but won’t even consider that the Acai has anything to do with it.

Since that appointment, I have had several more testosterone tests. My level stays at a normal or high-normal (430-520 ng/dl). My blood profile (the high red blood cells) has remained within the normal limits. I attribute this to the fact that I’m no longer supplementing with testosterone injections. I feel great, I have energy, my weight is down a few pounds and I still really enjoy it when I poop! I’m not necessarily saying that Acai is responsible for all this, but I’m not saying that it isn’t either!

I continue to see both doctors just in case. So far though, every blood test has been normal!

If you think you might have low testosterone, you might consider going to a doctor to get it checked out. A lot of “old-school” doctors are of the opinion that low testosterone is just part of growing old and they aren’t comfortable prescribing testosterone. You probably should look for an Endocrinologist or an anti-aging doctor – someone who specializes in hormone replacement therapy.

I’m obviously a HUGE believer in the benefits of Acai berry supplementation. If you want to give Acai a try, you should use only pure Acai (as opposed to Acai mixed in with various other supplements).
